Open Grants Programme
Eligibility for the Open Grants Programme
Find out more about the application process, including whether your organisation is eligible to apply
We know how much work goes into making an application and the Trustees are keen to help charities as much as possible prior to submitting your request for funding.
In order to make sure that your project is a good fit with the Volant Trust’s areas of funding, please read our FAQs, criteria for funding and how the application process works below.
Do you accept applications from individuals?
No, the Volant Trust only accepts applications from registered charities, community interest companies and community organisations.
We need funding for equipment. Will you provide funding towards this?
No, the Volant Trust does not generally provide funds for capital expenditure. It specifically gives funding towards project and administrative core costs. Although for the Covid-19 response fund, applications can be submitted for projects which include PPE or other essential medical equipment with awards made at the sole discretion of the Trustees.
Will you accept an application for one of your ‘Other Funding’ areas such as multiple sclerosis or international causes?
In addition to the Open Grants Programme, the Volant Trust will only accept applications for the Covid-19 response fund from charities or their projects demonstrating a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Do you fund projects from across the UK?
Our Open Grants programme is only open to projects taking place in Scotland, whose beneficiaries are based there too. The Covid-19 response fund covers the UK and international, providing that the charity applying demonstrates a strong focus on alleviating social deprivation and helping vulnerable groups who have been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Is there a limit to the value of grants awarded?
For the Open Grants programme, the Volant Trust seeks to fund projects in Scotland that will make a real difference to the beneficiaries. We deliver a funding programme which makes multi-year awards (for up to three years) of £15,000 or less per annum.
For the other areas of funding, such as the Covid-19 response fund, any grants are made at the sole discretion of the Trustees.
Will you accept applications for fund raising campaigns or to support us in our fundraising activities?
No, the Volant Trust will only support specific projects and it does not support general fundraising activities.
Can we make an application for funding to then distribute to others in the form of grants or Bursaries?
No, the Volant Trust will only support projects or core costs that will support organisations to deliver work to support our specific programme areas.
Do you provide funding retrospectively?
No, The Volant Trust does not cover costs already incurred or activities which have already taken place.
Am I eligible to apply?
If you have read through the FAQs and still think you are eligible to apply, please complete our Eligibility Checklist for the Open Grants Programme or the Covid-19 response fund , to help you to determine whether your project meets either of our funding criteria.
Our criteria for funding
Our Open Grants programme will consider one-off projects or multi-year applications. Only in exceptional circumstances will grants exceed three years.
We are keen to support work that will make a lasting difference with awards made at any level up to a maximum limit of £15,000 per year.
How the application process works
You can apply to our Open Grants programme at any time. All applications are handled by Foundation Scotland, an independent grant making charity, and must be submitted via their website. There are two stages to the application process. Firstly, all applicants are required to complete an initial enquiry form outlining their project. Then once reviewed, you may be invited to submit a full application.
Applying for funding
Eligibility for the Open Grants Programme
To help you to determine whether your project meets our funding criteria we’ve put together a short series of questions.
1. Is your organisation a registered charity, community interest company, community organisation or social enterprise? (Please note, we do not accept applications from individuals)
2. Is your charity, or the project for which you are applying for funding, directly concerned with the alleviation of social deprivation, particularly among women and children?
3. Does your project take place in Scotland?
4. Are all of the beneficiaries of your project based in Scotland?
5. Is your application for funding towards one or more of the following:
a. Project costs
b. Running costs
c. Core costs
If you answered ‘Yes’ to all 5 questions, your project may be eligible for funding.
Please note: we receive far more applications than we are able to fund, so even if you meet the criteria this is not a guarantee that we will be able to support your project, as competition for funding is high.
